Chapter 7

Rafael met with his lawyer friend. He was one of the best criminal defense lawyers around. Rafael told him about Jake Woods. The lawyer took the case right away. They set up a meeting with Jake at the Springfield Police Station.

The pair got to the station at one o’clock. They waited for Jake in a small room.

Rafael hadn’t seen Jake in over a week. He looked awful. Jake had lost at least five pounds. He hadn’t shaved. And it looked like he hadn’t slept in days.

Rafael introduced Jake to the lawyer. Jake thanked them both for coming.

“You’re always getting me out of trouble,” Jake said.

“Don’t worry about that now,” said Rafael. “Just tell us what happened.”

“I’ll tell you what I can,” Jake said. “But everything is foggy. I think I was drugged.”

“Do the best you can,” his lawyer said. “Every bit of information is important.”

Jake told them how he snuck into the Fargo Building. He told them about the hole in the wall. He told them about getting hit over the head.

“I woke up in a small room,” Jake said. “My feet and hands were tied. But then they must have knocked me out again. The next thing I remember is the police picking me up. I don’t even know how I got home. My head was killing me. I didn’t even know the bank had been robbed until I was arrested. It’s all a blur. I just can’t remember!”

“That’s okay, Jake. We believe you,” his lawyer said. “It sounds like you were drugged and set up. Don’t worry, we’ll get you off.”

That night the Silvas talked about what they’d found out. Ana had a report on Victor Stone. No one at the Fargo Building had seen him in weeks. JJ Long called Stone’s office. It looked like he was involved. His assistant said he’d taken a leave of absence.

Rafael couldn’t believe how much information Rob Torres had given Franco and Antonio. They could finally talk to a guard. If they could find him. It may be the break they needed.

“Doug Harrington is our best lead,” Rafael said. “We’ll check him out tomorrow.”
